Trauma-Informed Therapy FAQ: Answers for Individuals Navigating Relationship Challenges in Burlington
-
What is trauma-informed therapy, and how is it different from regular talk therapy?
Trauma-informed therapy goes beyond surface-level talk. It focuses on creating emotional safety, understanding how trauma lives in the body, and moving at a pace that feels respectful to your nervous system. Whether you're recovering from emotional abuse or childhood neglect, I use approaches like IFS and somatic work to help clients feel more connected, empowered, and safe again.
-
Is therapy only for people who have experienced trauma?
Not at all! Therapy can support anyone navigating relationship challenges, anxiety, self-doubt, or life transitions. It’s a place to explore patterns, strengthen coping skills, and develop self-understanding, whether or not you’ve experienced trauma.
-
Can I do trauma therapy even if I don’t remember everything that happened?
Yes, trauma therapy can still be helpful even if you don’t remember everything. You don’t need all the details for healing to begin. A trauma-informed therapist can support you in exploring how the past may be affecting you now, through emotions, relationships, or body responses, and can help you build tools for safety, understanding, and self-trust.
-
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy can be helpful if you’re navigating relationship challenges, feeling anxious or disconnected, struggling with self-worth, or simply wanting to better understand yourself. Therapy is a safe, supportive space to explore your experiences, develop coping strategies, and reconnect with your authentic self. Many people find that even a few sessions can provide clarity, emotional relief, and practical tools for growth.
-
What can I expect in our sessions?
Our sessions are a safe, judgment-free space where you can share what feels most important to you, at your own pace. I work in a gentle, indirect way that honors your comfort and readiness. Together, we’ll explore your experiences, notice patterns, and develop tools to support your healing and growth. Therapy is a collaborative process. I’m here to listen, support, and guide you every step of the way.
-
How long does therapy usually last?
Therapy is unique to each person. I usually recommend booking your first couple of sessions weekly or biweekly to help us build a trusting relationship and support you in meeting your goals. After that, session frequency can be adjusted based on what feels right for you. Some clients continue for a few months, while others choose longer-term support.
-
What is the cost of therapy sessions?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes long and cost $175, with no added HST. Payment is accepted via cash or e-transfer after each session. Receipts are provided for insurance reimbursement, but coverage depends on your individual plan, please confirm with your provider. I do not offer direct billing. Fees and insurance eligibility are subject to change.
-
How do I pay for therapy sessions?
You can pay for your therapy session by credit card, Visa Debit, e-transfer, or cash. Receipts are provided for insurance reimbursement, but I do not offer direct billing. For convenience, you may choose to keep a card on file securely through Jane. Your card will only be charged if you miss a session without 48 hours’ notice or have an unpaid balance. This option is completely optional, you’re always welcome to pay by e-transfer or cash instead.
-
What is your cancellation policy?
I understand that life happens and plans can change. Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This policy helps me maintain a fair and accessible schedule for all clients seeking support. Cancellations or reschedules with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged the full session fee. Thank you for your understanding!
-
Are your therapy sessions virtual or in-person?
I offer both! You can attend therapy virtually from the comfort and privacy of your own home anywhere in Ontario, or visit me in person at my warm, modern, and private clinic in Burlington, ON. Whichever feels right for you is perfect.
-
What if I’m not sure therapy is working?
It’s totally normal to wonder about this! Therapy is a process, and sometimes change takes time. If you’re feeling stuck or unsure, just bring it up with me, I’m here to listen and adjust our work so it feels meaningful and helpful.
